Jason's Bookshelf

The way I was raised, it's always good to be well Read... Here's some suggestions from my favorites. If you have the time, look 'em up. You might enjoy them.

Mostly True: Collected Stories and Drawings - Brian Andreas

Little poems, and anecdotes that remind you that magic is where you find it.

Griffin and Sabine trilogy - Nick Bantock

A little bit of mystery and a lot of beatiful art in the form of correspondence.

House on Mango Street - Sandra Cisneros

A beautiful book that slowly reveals the life of a young girl and her neighborhood through 2-page vignettes.

The Alchemist and Veronika Decides to Die - Paulo Coelho

Modern myths about following dreams and living every moment to the fullest.

Travels - Michael Crichton

The travels begin geographically and slowly move inwards.

Going To Pieces, Without Falling Apart - Mark Epstein, M.D.

It's a wonderful treatise on acceptance and letting go.

the Sandman: Brief lives - Gaiman, Thompson, and Locke

Questing, dialouges, and philosiphizing of the characters in Gaiman's new mythology

Long Quiet Highway - Natalie Goldberg

The author's own journey to learn to write and and care for her soul

Uncle Remus Tales - Joel Chandler Harris

Perhaps no longer PC, but still wonderful children's stories

Dictionary Schmictionary - Paul Hoffman and Matt Freedman

A fun guide to Yiddish.

The Tao of Pooh - Benjamin Hoff

Read it! Then, tell me what it's about.

About a Boy - Nick Hornby

I also liked "High Fidelity," but in this case, the book is so much better than a movie that itself is a joy to watch. It's about a kid growing down and an adult growing up... both learning to complete themselves.

Manitous: the Spiritual World of the Ojibwe - Basil Johnston

Stories of the Northeastern Indians as told by a storyteller who believes his tales

The Gunslinger - Stephen King

A gritty Western/fantasy book. This is the first book of his "Dark Tower" series... all of which are good, but this one stands out.

The Way Things Work - David Macaulay and Neil Ardley

It's amazing how much technology wooly mammoths understand, but we don't.

The Earth is Enough - Harry Middleton

A book of childhood memories in a rural mountain town.

Diaries of John Muir - John Muir

Growing up, learning lessons the hard way, and travels on foot by one of our most influential American conservationists.

Little - David Truer

A winding plot merely there so you can get to know the characters inside and out.

The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkein

Still "the" classic of Fantasy writing.

Calvin and Hobbes -Bill Waterson

Smile and remember what it was like to be a kid.
